Fundamental Constants: α = 1/137 and Others

Abstract

The fine-structure constant, α = 1/137, is a dimensionless quantity characterising the strength of the electromagnetic interaction. It first emerged in the spectroscopy of the hydrogen atom but is now recognised as a universal constant of modern physics. Precise measurements of α provide a stringent test of contemporary quantum field theories, which relate the constant to fluctuations of the quantum vacuum.
