Tak powstał słynny Sarkofag — prowizoryczna, lecz gigantyczna osłona z betonu i stali, wzniesiona w warunkach wysokiego skażenia i ogromnej presji czasu.
Abstract
Exactly 40 years have passed since the Chernobyl disaster. It should be remembered that the disaster did not end when the fire in the fourth reactor was extinguished. Just a few weeks after the accident, work began on a structure intended to isolate the destroyed unit from the environment as quickly as possible. This is how the famous Sarcophagus was created — a provisional yet gigantic shield of concrete and steel, erected under conditions of high contamination and enormous time pressure.
After many years, this shelter was replaced by the New Safe Confinement, known as the Arch: one of the largest movable engineering structures in the world, slid over the reactor in 2016. Its purpose is not only to prevent the spread of contamination, but also to enable the gradual dismantling of the old Sarcophagus. The article describes the history of both structures, the scale of the construction work, the actual level of hazard in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, and the consequences of the drone strike on the Arch in February 2025.
